Although raised in the city of Calgary, Kara is no stranger to wilderness. She spent her youth exploring the Canadian Rockies with her parents & older brother, eventually finding her way to the East Kootenay’s where she completed a diploma program in Adventure Tourism & Small Business Operations.
Through this program Kara was introduced to the two things that would become the focus of her life for the next 10 years – Heli-skiing & Fly Fishing. She spent nearly a decade managing heli-skiing lodges in the British Columbia interior and, becoming increasingly more interested in fly fishing, began to explore the further reaches of northern BC. Kara’s passion for steelhead fishing brought her back to the Skeena region for several years and in 2013 decided to make a permanent move there.
It was around this time that Kara was invited to manage BC West Lodge on the Dean River. With the combination of towering mountains, coastal ruggedness and chrome bright steelhead it didn’t take long for the Dean to win Kara’s heart. She continues to work as the Lodge Operations Manager for BC West and has recently taken on the position of Head Guide as well.
In the coming winter seasons Kara will return to Terrace BC and hopes to take her first steps into the world of commercial tying.
